My Spending Freeze: Take Two will start on October 1st (eek!) and I have started preparing. I have spent time seriously trying to think about what I will need in the coming months so I can prepare now and never falter from my upcoming lifestyle.
Things I need before my Spending Freeze:
-Stamps: I recently bought a huge pack of thank you cards and have been sending out a few a week. I am reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin and in it she explores what makes her happy. She writes down daily one sentence of something she is thankful for. I thought about trying that but feel like it may turn into more of a chore than anything else. So, I decided to send thank you cards to people in my life who have recently done something kind for me. If the person is in my everyday life then I will hand deliver the card (saving postage) but if not, I’m okay with spending 47 cents on them. I have about 8 stamps left but my Spending Fast is serious business. So, I am going to buy a $10 pack of stamps to hold me over till I can ask for more for Christmas.
-Trash Can: I have a desk now! And I have been spending a LOT more time at it since I have started my second job as a writer. I have found myself doing paperwork and budgeting at the desk as well and realized I don’t have a trash can nearby. It isn’t a necessity but I am splurging on a cheap trashcan from Target. I figured that if I create a space that is welcoming, I will be more comfortable sitting at a desk for hours, writing my life away.
-Sunglasses: I had Lasik surgery a few years ago and I wake up thankful for the ability to see literally every day. The only problem…my eyes are ridiculously sensitive to the sun now. My lovely pooch Xena has never chewed up anything, except my sacred Ray Bans. My retinas are going to fry out of my head if I don’t immediately buy shades.
-Website: I am buying another website. http://www.chelseaoverton.com. As previously mentioned, I am working a second job as a writer and have recently had numerous instances where people want to see an online portfolio of my work. If $14 a year for web hosting can potentially increase my revenue long-term, I believe it’s worth it. Plus, it will make me seem slightly more legitimate.
-Oil Change: I need one.
-October trips: Before I decided to get serious about my SF again, I committed to a few things in October. My BFF Lauren is getting married next weekend and I have booked a hotel already. I committed to visiting my best man friend in VA in a few weeks and I’m traveling to DC for a high-school-lady-friend-reunion. The trips to VA and DC are only about a 3 hr. drive so the main expense will be gas. I have budgeted out a certain amount for each trip and put it aside already. The trips are covered and while it would save a little money if I didn’t go, I’ve learned that people are more important than money. So, no more planning trips for this lady but I will surely enjoy the ones I’m going on in the next month.
Starting the Spending Freeze again is so exciting. And scary! But it is ultimately what I want to do and I know it will make my life so much happier in the end.
